Archaic is the new contemporary

Things we've seen
at the Venice Biennale

Swiss Pavilion / Pamela Rosenkranz
Rosenkranz isolates the large interior space with plastics, filling it with a monochrome liquid mass matching a standardized northern European skin-tone. This Eurocentric skin color, reminiscent of the "carnate" used in Renaissance painting to render the visual qualities of human flesh, is employed in today's advertising industry as a proven way to physically enhance attention.

Italian Pavilion / Vanessa Beecroft
For the installation 'le membre fantôme', Vanessa Beecroft takes us back to the classical language of sculpture through a conceptual perspective, leading us towards an intimate gallery room inhabited by timeless statuary. Beecroft presents a scene that is visible only at a distance, where the viewer must look through a crevice carved out of two marble walls.

Introducing Pergraphica.
Paper for Perfectionists.

In 2014 we were asked by international Paper Manufacturer Mondi Group to develop a Brand Name and Identity Design for their new multifunctional high premium paper. The brand name Pergraphica®, which derives from the latin-origin Pergraphicus (most exquisite and very skillful) was born and meets perfectly the multifunctional skills of the paper. Pergraphica represents as well the connection to arts and graphics; it's the perfect paper to achieve extraordinary printing results of imagery and colorful graphics because of it's pigmented surface.

The signet acts as a reference to watermark signs which were used by paper mills in the past to distinguish their quality paper from replicas. The sublogo was created as a modern watermark which is building a connection to the history of paper manufacture. The hand-drawn abstract flower is inspired by south-African Mondia Whitei, Mondi Group's name patron, and is referring to the company's strong environmental awareness and its sustainable products.

Vienna Art Week 2014

We've just finished our sparkling signage "the running mindmap" for Electric Avenue in the Viennese Museumsquartier.

In collaboration with eSeL, who came up with the idea, we've created an alternative signage system which leads down the Electric Avenue of the quartier21 during VIENNA ART WEEK 2014: the "Running Mindmap" contains quotes, hints and cross references providing insight into the worlds of work and thought of the institutions located in the Electric Avenue. The dialog unwinding through these direct quotes and insider perspectives expands into the virtual space via QR codes and hashtags; in this way the networking of q21 users becomes visible both on site and online.

Le Corbusier, La Cité Radieuse

Not just Another City

We love the many modernist buildings in Marseille. The most famous one is Le Corbusier's Cité Radieuse with its breathtaking rooftop view over Marseille and the Mediterranean. Since last year French designer Ora Ito is inviting artists to "take over" the space for a certain time. This year's installation of Daniel Buren is on view June 30th to September 30th.

St. Tropez & Brigitte Bardot

The song St. Tropez by Francis Lai / performed by Brigitte Bardot is part of the album "In Flight Entertainment" from 1996. It's a great compilation of Easy Listening music which experienced a revival in the mid-nineties when Grunge was exploited and we all were yearning for some glamorous sounds reminiscing about extravagant movies of the 50s.

La Cité étrange / Paris
Ilya et Emilia Kabakov

On the very last day of the strange city we went to the Grand Palais to see this extraordinary installation of Russian couple Kabakov for Monumenta 2014. The artists have taken up the Monumenta challenge with the creation of a utopian and mysterious city, both monumental yet intimate. The installation is inspired from the Renaissance, Romanticism and modern science, and is the synthesis of a long artistic career.

Bon Anniversaire!

Paper Manufacturer Mondi Group asked us to create a 25th Anniversary logo for their environmental paper "Bio Top 3" – as well as a set of four charming birthday cards that were sent out as a very special gift. We were quite into this Birthday issue lately as we were celebrating our Birthdays just as well in April and May. We envisioned a tropical garden with pineapples, a Miami Flamingo surrounded by hand-written typography all stamped in a very freaky silver foil, a hand-made marbled wrapping paper and – as you can see above – a très french illustration which is blind-embossed additionally. Our families will receive those cards probably for the next ten years...

Our new love: marble

We were experimenting with marbled paper lately for our magazine Blog On Paper and felt that it's the time for reinventing this classical material and it's beautiful pattern.
It reminded us how moved we were when visiting Mies van der Rohe's Barcelona Pavillon with the amazing onyx marble wall. The modern constructivist era in graphic design is about coming to an end and there is this appetite for more rounded shapes or even psychedelic forms and the marble pattern combines that perfectly.

The link between cars and art has always been strong. Les Reines Prochaines
from Switzerland

It was all about political statements, rebellion against
the bourgeois society and, last but not least, about feminist aesthetics and action. All of the founders are visual artists
and created music by chopping vegetables for a soup, singing
and putting together some synthesizer sounds.

I came across Les Reines Prochaines while working for the Swiss/French Designer Ruedi Baur in Paris and at the weekends
I would wander around the beautiful but weird Père Lachaise listening to this song all the time. It's a hilarious persiflage but at the same time quite serious. And of course
I adored Helena Christensen during the supermodel era of the 90s in the music video of the original song by Chris Isaak...

Designers: Sophie Balch & Fanny Wacklin Nilsson

Graphic Design
(Can sometimes be)
a Boys club.

A few months ago I got an interview request from Sophie Balch and Fanny Wacklin Nilsson – two Graphic Designers from Brighton, UK – to answer questions about the role of female designers in contemporary graphic design. As I have been studying the gender issue in our domain for quite a while I was very delighted to contribute my personal experiences and thoughts.

Dear male readers: it is not about feminism, it is about equality. Those things are happening in an unconscious way. Of course you do not notice immediately. We all just want to work together and have fun!

Sophie Balch and Fanny Wacklin Nilsson:
"Through university we noticed that male designers were a lot more prominent than women. Interested in why this was, we began asking successful female designers questions such as “Why are there fewer ‘famous’ female graphic designers?” to gain perspective from people who are experienced working in a male dominated industry. The gathered content is a starting point for an ongoing discussion as well a celebration of female designers. The unconventionally large size of the publication actively asks the reader to engage with the material by piecing A3 pages together to assemble a larger editorial piece, illustrating the idea of reading the bigger picture. Printed on a risograph and digitally."

I went to sample sale of CONFETTISYSTEM lately and got the Party Party Paper Diamond which is featured also in our Mondi Lookbook. Confettisystem are Julie Ho and Nicholas Andersen,

LAURA is the Zine of Jared Leon & Johanna Heldebro who have been publishing it for 3 years now. It all started in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where many things were going on at that time and Jared and Johanna tried to capture this flow in their magazine.

CLOG MAGAZINE'S February 13 issue is about Brutalism which is a defining architectural style of the post-war era – characterised by severe, abstract geometries and the use of cast concrete, block and brick.

Photographs Erieta Attali

The cosmopolitan Landscape

New York City; the last weeks we met regularly with ueber-talented architectural photographer and cosmopolitan Erieta Attali whose images of the most visionary, contemporary architecture around the globe are transcendent to us.

We are very happy to develop and design a new identity and website for Erieta who has been working as photographer for Richard Meier, Toyo Ito, Steven Holl, Tadao Ando – just to point out a few. As serious as that all sounds, we are always ending up giggling like kids when we meet with Erieta. Maybe it's because she brings Champaign to our reunions...

In NYC, I'm always stopping by at PRINTED MATTER, INC., which is – according to their website – the world's largest non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of publications made by Artists. They also organize the NY ART BOOK FAIR. This time I got the magazine TOILET PAPER (which is spread on the photo above), the art magazine KALEIDOSKOPE and a newsprint specimen of COLOPHON FOUNDRY. I stayed over two hours in the store. It's like going to a museum where you actually can buy everything.

There's the program of the BARYSHNIKOV ARTS CENTER NYC (the one in fluorescent color) whose building is right next to ours. Last week I was smoking a cigarette downstairs and realized that Mikhail Baryshnikov himself was standing next to me smoking a cigarette too. I just enrolled for ballet class here in NYC and was telling myself to cut down cigarette consumption but when the greatest ballet dancer ever is smoking a cigarette right beside you, your intentions are suddenly gone. I'm doing well at ballet class by the way.

I always get attention when wearing this self-made necklace (above) inspired by plumbers and sailors. HENRI J. SILLAM, our Haute Joaillerie client, would wrinkle his nose in complete disgust. But I have to say that Building Supplies Stores are a very sophisticated inspiration source. I really can recommend going there!

De retour à New York for the next two months! We are working on Blog On Paper Magazine and the completion of Architect Paola Iacucci's manifesto book. I'm very happy to meet Yehuda Safran, who is contributing to the book, next week in his NY studio. Yehuda just developed the Adolf Loos exhibition at the Viennese MAK which opened on March 13th.

Customized Photography

We met charismatic photographer Meinrad Hofer in New York City a year ago and became friends instantly. I remember having many cups of tea together in our kitchen in Hell's Kitchen with the Empire building in view, discussing the website in every detail. We all came up with the idea that it would be amazing for a photographer being able to arrange photos differently thus creating a customized portfolio for each viewer. By arranging those photo portfolios, as Meinrad wants them to be seen by a client, an url is being generated automatically. Meinrad now is able to send photo-customized websites to clients. And René, our invention and innovation pro, worked it out! Yeah!

Our Question Manifesto published in Design Austria Magazine.

What's pretty funny about it: our "manifesto design" has been modified by the magazine's graphic designer who apparently was ashamed to just put a simple photograph and text on the page. So now in the magazine layout there's a line framing the manifesto and our original typeface Univers has been also magically changed into a decorative italic serif. Maybe the designer was bored or he just answered one of our questions "Bauhaus or Art Déco?"... it's too hilarious!

But many thanks to the creative genius Nikolaus Prokop who wrote very nice things about us. (yes, a certain comparison with Helmut Lang... we are flattered)

Raimund Abraham
& the ACFNY

I found some beautiful drawings of the ACFNY by Raimund Abraham in Paola Iacucci's library. The building is one of my favorites in NYC.

Raimund Abraham in an interview with Kenneth Frampton: "If there has been any inspiration or reflection upon a particular New York condition it was my fascination with the simplicity and surprising complexity of the scissor stair. Architecturally it has become the Vertebra of the tower, striving for infinity as the endless column of Brancusi."

Quirky Questions from The press

A short while ago Austrian Newspaper Die Presse asked us to answer five questions related to our creative work. Hipster: a transatlantic discussion

Who exactly is the modern hipster and why he has such a bad reputation, is currently trying to answer this book that was published in the U.S. two years ago and now translated into German. The book is a collection of lectures, discussions and exhilarant essays.

What we need to say:
1. the modern Hipster is not an artist
2. Vice Magazine has often been accused of using irony to promote racist, homophobic and sexist attitudes. Dear Hipster, this is not cool!
